It’s my Cake Day!

Today is the 365th day this blog has been live.

Wow, and I was caught unprepared.  Not only am I woefully behind on posts; but I didn’t have anything ready for this date like I had planned!  I wrote this in one sitting, between 0600 and 0848 in between teaching so I would at least have something up to commiserate the day.  I am ashamed.

When I say “woefully behind” I mean, back in April a guide friend of mine (and reader of this blog) offered to take meout on a trip for what I call the “Texas Weed Classic” or the THC Mixed Bag Tourney.  The guide was #FlyStock supporter Judson Cole and he guides the texas Hill Country full-time with his business “Hell-N Back Outfitters“.  What started out as a half-day, turned into a full day and I can’t thank him enough for that.  I really had a great time, and I promise!!! I WILL write about that trip soon!

Another post that I needed to get out actually fell apart.  Early this year; guide and Umpqua Signature Tyer, Jay Zimmerman (OBIF Friend and post-hoster) released a new prototype fly on his website.  One off-hand Facebook message later, I received an entire variety pack box of flies from Jay.  Awesome flies, and all hand tied by the Master himself including his top-water prototype.  Around the same time came a surprise package from Zazzy Pop flies, filled with hard-bodied poppers from Owl Jones.  The idea was to fish both top-water bass candies in three distinctly different warm water environments, and the whole thing was to be posted on The Fin.  I failed horribly, but it wasn’t because of bad flies.  First off, Owl’s popper are harder than woodpecker lips.  I’ll go through a couple of boogle bugs in one trip, breaking them into bits like a pack of smarties.  The Zazzy Poppers, are indestructible.  Jay’s Booby Frog is nothing like you’ve ever fished.  This baby is an amazing fly, and there is nothing aside from actual frogs to compare it to.  The super-simple design could be tweaked to even mimic a more realistic mouse fly.  I still plan on this elaborate “fish-off” blog post, but it will have to wait until next spring.  Stay Tuned!

A Year In Review!

If you take a quick peak at the goal page, you can see I did… okay.  Most of the big goals I set for myself were accomplished and I must say, I’m pretty proud of it all.  This also brings up another post I am behind on, check #9.  You can read dieFische’s version here.  Also, somebody was finally crazy enough desperate enough nice enough to bring me on as a member of their pro-staff.  You have heard me talking about them, (and no it was not Diablo, like so many people assumed) the company is SmithFly and their gear is splendiforous.

Stats!

I closed out this year with a nice even 5,030 visitors to my little section of ‘net estate; with 19,121 page views!

What’s Coming in 2012-2013:

Firstly, I am moving.  OBIF is headed toward the Mitten!  I will be re-locating to Detroit less than a week from today.  The site will be updated with a new theme and layout after I complete the journey.

Secondly, less guest posting.  You will still be able to catch me on other people’s sites, but most of my posts will be here.

Third, more personal and non-sensical posts.

Fourth, I will be adding advertisment links for a VERY limited number of companies.  Don’t worry, they will be personally vetted by me.

Fifth, brace yourself.  8-Bit Fly is coming…

Lastly, a jealousy counter.  I am going to fish the crap out of this next year, and travel.  Be prepared to be jealous, or not; I’m a cheapskate.
